Number Ones was released by Sony Music in late 2003. It is estimated to have sold well over 6 million copies worldwide. A partnering DVD was released which charted well in most countries and has to date shipped over 1 million units worldwide.

As well as including most of Jackson's international #1 hits, the compilation included two bonus tracks: "Break of Dawn", which was a track on Jackson's 2001 studio album Invincible, and "One More Chance", which was a new song written for Jackson by R. Kelly. The U.S. release also included another track, this time a live rendition of "Ben".
